Laurel (also known as cherry laurel) is an evergreen, vigorous and very hardy shrub – mostly used as a versatile hedging that suits both modern and more traditional gardens. It has large, glossy leaves and tolerates any reasonable soil as well as windy, coastal conditions. Laurel hedge is known for dense and fast growth, ideally suited for sites in need of privacy as it can grow up to 12-24 inches a year. Mature hedge can reach up to 5 meters in height – although with regular pruning it can be kept at much smaller height. Laurel hedge can be trimmed in spring or early summer to encourage fresh growth.
